Android Is a mobile operating system. It is a modified version of open-source software and the Linux kernel. Basically, it is for touchscreen mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. It was developed by the Open Handset Alliance and is commercially sponsored by Google. It was announced in November of 2007 and was the first device with The OS was launched in September of 2008.
An open-source software whose source code is known as the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Apache licenses Android open source projects. However Android devices ship with additional pre-installed software. Most importantly, Google Mobile Services (GMS) includes applications such as Google Chrome, apps on Google Play and related to the development platform of Google Play Services. About 70% of smartphones run Google’s ecosystem.

Its source code is useful in developing a variety of other electronic products, such as game consoles, digital cameras, portable media players, PCs and others, each with a special user interface. Smart TV and Wear-to-Wear OS have an Android operating system and Google develops both. The file type of this operating system is APK format. It is typically available through the Google Play Store or any other open-source platform.

It is the best-selling operating system worldwide on smartphones since 2011 and tablets since 2013. With more than two billion monthly active users as of May 2017, it is the most used operating system in mobile phones. As of August 2020, over 3 million apps are available on the Google Play Store. Android versions are named after sweets such as Jelly Bean, KitKat, Marshmallow, Pie, and so on. The most recent version is Android 11 as of September 8, 2020.
Android devices use to run the battery and it manages processes to keep power consumption to a minimum. When an application is not in use the user can suspend its operation so that it does not use battery power or other CPU resources such as RAM. It automatically manages applications stored in its memory. When memory is low, the system will show alerts and may sometimes automatically shut down idle processes. Nevertheless, there are also third-party task killer applications but they do more harm than good.
It has every security feature to protect the data of users in Android smartphones. Various types of screen locks such as fingerprint, password, PIN, face recognition, voice unlock are available.
